Departments

The Saugatuck/Douglas Police Department has had some complaints about pedestrians and bicyclist not following the rules of the road. With summer quickly approaching we would like to give pedestrians and bicyclist a friendly reminder about the rules of the road.

According to the Michigan Compiled Law

257.655 Pedestrians on highways; violation as civil infraction.

Sec. 655. (1) Where sidewalks are provided, a pedestrian shall not walk upon the main traveled portion of the highway. Where sidewalks are not provided, pedestrians shall, when practicable, walk on the left side of the highway facing traffic which passes nearest.

(2) A person who violates this section is responsible for a civil infraction.

257.657

For bicyclist riding on the roadway, under Michigan Compiled Law 257.657 a bicyclist is subject to all of the duties applicable to the driver of a vehicle. This means you must obey all street signs such as stop signs.

257.660a

Michigan Complied Law 257.660a says that a person operating a bicycle upon a highway or street at less than the existing speed of traffic shall ride as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway.

257.660c

Michigan Complied Law 257.660c is as follows:

Sec. 660c.

(1) An individual operating a bicycle upon a sidewalk or a pedestrian crosswalk shall yield the right-of-way to pedestrians and shall give an audible signal before overtaking and passing a pedestrian.

(2) An individual shall not operate a bicycle upon a sidewalk or a pedestrian crosswalk if that operation is prohibited by an official traffic control device.

(3) An individual lawfully operating a bicycle upon a sidewalk or a pedestrian crosswalk has all of the rights and responsibilities applicable to a pedestrian using that sidewalk or crosswalk.

If you have any questions regarding the laws please feel free to contact the Saugatuck/Douglas Police Department. Have a safe and wonderful summer.
